Crossrail secures extra funds but completion date now unknown
A revised financing package for the final stages of London’s troubled Crossrail project has been confirmed by the Mayor of London, Mr Sadiq Khan, the Greater London Authority, and Transport for London (TfL) with the total cost of the project set to rise by £1.6-2bn.

French-Swiss cross-border rail link reopens
THE 20km line from Delle on the Swiss-French border to Belfort was officially reopened on December 6 ahead of the reintroduction of train services with the start of the new timetable on December 9. Most of the line has been out of service since 1992.

Alstom awarded Mumbai Metro Line 3 CBTC contract
MUMBAI Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL) awarded Alstom a contract worth more than €100m on December 10 to supply the Urbalis 400 CBTC signalling system for Line 3 of the Mumbai Metro.

ISRAEL Railways (IR) has awarded Alstom a Shekels 186m ($US 49.8m) contract for the design, supply, installation, testing, and preparation of ETCS Level 2 on 192 trains.

Rhine-Ruhr Express network launched
GERMANY’s Rhine-Ruhr Express (RRX) regional network was launched with the start of the 2019 timetable on December 9, when Abellio’s German subsidiary Abellio Rail NRW took over operation of Line RE11 (Düsseldorf – Essen – Dortmund – Hamm – Kassel) services from DB Regio.

NETHERLANDS Railways (NS) marked the official entry of its fleet of New Generation Sprinter (SNG) EMUs into commercial service on December 9, when Dutch state secretary for railways at the Ministry of Transport, Mrs Stientje van Veldhoven, and NS CEO Mr Roger van Boxtel made an inaugural trip from Haarlem to The Hague Central.
