The unique characteristics of Vienna’s U6 metro line were causing significant wheel and rail wear, resulting in increased wheelset maintenance costs, reduced service life, and worsening reliability. Operator Wiener Linien, rail measurement specialist PJM, Graz University of Technology and Voestalpine Railway Systems have undertaken a project to redesign wheel-rail contact in order to reduce wear.
