Investment in Germany’s 33,280km rail network has failed to keep pace with steadily rising freight and passenger traffic, leading to increasing customer dissatisfaction. The latest initiative is to focus on the thorough renovation of a 3500km core network which carries about a quarter of total traffic. David Briginshaw reports on the multiple challenges ahead.
