RENFE Alquiler, the rolling stock leasing business of Spanish national operator Renfe, has signed a contract with Stadler for the supply of six Euro 6000 high-power multi-system electric locomotives.
The tri-voltage, six-axle locomotives will be fitted with universal bogies that will enable a straightforward change of axles to support operation on both the 1668mm-gauge Iberian mainline network and the 1435mm-gauge high-speed network in Spain, including the line from Figueres to Perpignan in France.
The 6MW locomotives are the most powerful in Spain and will be able to haul up to 1800-tonne freight trains on both broad and standard-gauge infrastructure. They are certified for operation in Spain, France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Manufacturing will take place at Stadler’s plant at Albuixech in Valenica and delivery is scheduled for the first half of 2026. The order is a follow-on from the agreement with Stadler to supply freight operator Renfe Mercancías with 24 Euro 6000s, which was signed in 2021.
Renfe says the procurement is in line with its Strategic Plan 2023-2028, which aims to boost the activities of Renfe Alquiler. “This commitment represents a significant step towards promoting cross-border traffic between Spain and Europe through the Pyrenees and the development of new national railway infrastructure,” Renfe says.
