NIGERIAN Railway Corporation (NRC) has granted Traxport Rail Services a provisional operating and track access licence for the country’s 1435mm and 1067mm-gauge networks. The licence will enable Traxport to begin developing commercial freight services along key economic corridors and is a major step forward in NRC’s efforts to modernise the national railway and introduce private sector participation.
Traxport will focus initial operations on the Lagos - Kano corridor, which links the country’s main port with inland industrial and commercial centres. As it moves towards securing a full operating licence, the company says it plans to establish an integrated rail logistics platform focused on enhancing freight flows, improving supply chain reliability, and reducing congestion on the country’s road network. The company also intends to deploy cleaner locomotive technologies in support of national energy transition goals.
Traxport says its rail freight platform aligns with the federal government’s infrastructure and economic development priorities, which include improving logistics efficiency, encouraging private investment, and supporting long-term economic growth in Nigeria.
