GENESEE & Wyoming (G&W) launched Red Deer Railway (RDR) on December 2 in Bentley, Alberta, the holding company’s first shortline in western Canada. G&W has acquired the shortline’s assets and track access rights from Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC).
The 69km RDR runs entirely in Alberta, from Jackson to Homeglen, and uses operating rights over CPKC from Red Deer to Chigwell and Prentiss. A direct interchange with CPKC in Red Deer provides access to the wider North American network, while RDR’s wagon storage capacity, as well as intermodal transloading and wagon switching capabilities, offer broader logistics services. The railway’s 10 employees serve customers in the energy industry.
