Locon owns a fleet of 30 mostly diesel locomotives and more than 250 wagons, which are used for intermodal services. The operator also leases two class 189 Siemens Eurosprinter multi-system electric locomotives and Bombardier Traxx electric locomotives.

Berlin-based Locon was founded in 2002 and expanded from initial contracts operating civil engineering trains for major German rail infrastructure projects.

As well as continuing to support major civil engineering projects, Locon operates intermodal services linking the main German North Sea ports with Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

In 2010 Locon established a Benelux operating subsidiary but this ceased trading following insolvency in 2017.

EPH already owns or is the majority owner of several German companies including brown coal mining and power station operators in Saxony and Brandenburg, both of which operate their own electrified industrial railways.
