ŠKODA Group has secured a contract to supply a new fleet of LRVs for the Swedish city of Uppsala as part of its plans to develop a new light rail network.
The agreement covers an initial order for 20 bi-directional, low-floor LRVs, with an option for a further 18 vehicles. Including the optional vehicles, long-term maintenance, overhaul services, technical support and spares, the contract is worth up to €270m.
The 38m-long LRVs will be based on Škoda's proven Tampere platform, which is already in service in Finland. Designed for Nordic operating conditions, each vehicle will accommodate up to 186 passengers, including 80 seated, and will feature five doorways on each side to support rapid boarding and alighting. Deliveries are scheduled for 2028.
The contract also includes a 12-year maintenance agreement and a 12-year overhaul programme, both with an option for a one-year extension.
The vehicles will incorporate a range of digital technologies, including an anti-collision system designed to detect vehicles, pedestrians and obstacles, alongside an intelligent speed-limiting system that automatically adjusts speed in curves and other designated sections.
The network
The Uppsala light rail network will comprise around 17km of double track and 22 stops, linking Uppsala Central station with key residential, university, hospital and commercial districts. The project is being developed jointly by Uppsala Municipality and Region Uppsala.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the line was held in 2024 and work is continuing on utility diversion. Track laying is scheduled to begin in 2026-27 alongside the construction of the depot and a new bridge across the Fyrisån river. Services are expected to start in 2029.
