TRENITALIA has signed a €260m contract with Hitachi Rail for the supply of nine new-generation Frecciarossa trains which have a design speed of 360km/h.
The contract adds to a previous deal signed in 2023 for 36 trains, plus 10 trains from an option for additional sets.
The investment is part of Italian State Railways’ (FS) strategic plan for fleet expansion and renewal. With plans to order further batches of two and 17 trains, Trenitalia will have 57 new Frecciarossa high-speed trains in service by 2029. Trenitalia intends to increase the total number to 74 by 2031.
The new multi-system trains will be designed to operate in Italy and on seven European railway networks. Hitachi says they will have an advanced traction systems for improved efficiency and a new design of traction motor.
The trains will be equipped with Hitachi Rail's HMAX digital asset management system which is designed to process real-time data to optimise operation, maintenance, and energy consumption.
To reduce their environment impact at the end of their life, the trains will have a 97.1% recyclability rate and a 98.2% material recovery rate.
