TURKISH state operator TCDD Taşımacılık has awarded Stadler a contract to design, manufacture and supply 35 Euro 4001 diesel-electric locomotives.
The six-axle locomotives, successors to the Euro 4000 design, will be built for heavy freight operations on non-electrified routes and steep gradients. Stadler describes the Euro 4001, which can deliver a power output of up to 3MW, as the most powerful diesel-electric locomotive currently available in Europe. The agreement also covers spares, consumables, special tools and test equipment, together with three years of maintenance and repair services.
Design and manufacture of the locomotives will take place at Stadler’s factory in Valencia, Spain. Delivery and commissioning will be supported locally by Stadler Service Türkiye, working in cooperation with Turkish partners Aykal Group and Certifer Türkiye.
The Euro 4001 is fully compliant with Euro Stage V emissions regulations, cutting particulate matter by more than 90% and nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbon emissions by over 50% compared with TCDD’s older diesel locomotives. The locomotives will be equipped with ETCS Level 2 as well as Turkey’s national ATS automatic train protection (ATP) system. The design is compliant with European Union (EU) Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI).
