STADLER has launched a new four-axle variant of its Euro locomotive family. Euro DuFour is designed to haul both passenger and freight trains on main and secondary lines, and is available as a tri-mode hybrid powered by the overhead electric supply, diesel engines or batteries.
The launch customer for the locomotive is SBB Cargo, which signed a contract for up to 129 units for supply between 2027 and 2029 at InnoTrans in September 2024. Further details of the locomotives were revealed at last week’s Transport Logistic trade fair in Munich.
Under the agreement with SBB, Stadler is initially supplying 36 Bo-Bo multi-system locomotives, capable of operating under 25kV ac, 15kV ac and 3kV dc electrification for a maximum output of 7MW. The design enables the inclusion of two 500kW diesel engines, or two traction battery modules providing up to 2MW of power, or a combination of both for last-mile operation. Up to 22 of the initial batch for SBB Cargo will be equipped with last-mile modules.
The Euro DuFour will be able to operate at up to 230km/h in passenger service and up to 160km/h when hauling freight trains.
The new locomotives will be manufactured using high-strength, low-alloy steel. They are also designed to be ready to be equipped with a hybrid coupler or the Digital Automatic Coupler (DAC), and FRMCS. The EuroDuFour also features tri-level inverter technology and is equipped for condition-based maintenance.
Stadler says the Euro DuFour is compliant with the European Union (EU) Technical Specification for Interoperability (TSI) for locomotives and will initially be approved to operate in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Manufacturing will take place at the Stadler plant in Valencia, Spain.
