ŠKODA Group has unveiled the first of 10 LRVs that it is supplying to Bergamo in northern Italy. The manufacturer says that deliveries will start on schedule next month for deployment later this year on the new Line T2 from Bergamo station to Villa d’Almè.
The 33m-long five-section bi-directional LRV is based on the Škoda ForCity Classic platform. The vehicle has been adapted to local needs as the new fleet will run both on a section of Line T1 in Bergamo before joining the new line laid on a former railway alignment to reach Villa d’Almè. Line T2 is due to open later this year.
The 100% low-floor LRV has capacity for 281 passengers, with eight wide double doors per side to enable rapid boarding and alighting. LED interior lighting has been installed and Škoda says the LRV has been designed for easier and more cost-effective maintenance by improving access to onboard equipment.
The new fleet for Bergamo also features the anti-collision system developed by Škoda which actively monitors the area in front of the vehicle.
Škoda is supplying the new fleet and maintaining it for three years as a member of the consortium that signed a €176.35m contract to design and build the 11.5km Line T2 with Bergamo Electric Tramways (TEB) in July 2024. The other members of the consortium are Impresa Milesi Geom Sergio, Generale Costruzioni Ferroviarie (GCF) and Impresa Edile Stradale Artifoni.
“The delivery of the first LRV, scheduled for March, represents a major milestone towards the opening of the new line and a further step forward in developing increasingly sustainable and efficient mobility for our region,” says TEB CEO, Gian Battista Scarfone.
