PKP Intercity has selected Alstom to supply 42 200km/h double-deck EMUs with an option for 30 additional trains. Alstom bid Zlotys 4.1bn ($US 1.bn) to supply the trains and Zlotys 2.8bn to maintain them for 30 years.
The other bid was from Stadler, which offered to supply the trains for Zlotys 4bn and to maintain them for Zlotys 3.3bn.
“The selected bid is nearly Zlotys 400m cheaper,” PKP Intercity says. “Other criteria were assessed, including energy efficiency and delivery dates. In the coming weeks, the selected manufacturer will have to complete the formalities necessary to sign the contract.
Alstom plans to manufacture the trains at its Chorzów factory.
PKP Intercity expects the trains to enter service in three and a half years’ time. They will be deployed on routes radiating from Warsaw to Gdańsk, Łódź, Olsztyn, Wrocław, Kraków, Białystok, and Terespol.
Each train will accommodate more than 500 passengers. The air-conditioned trains will be fitted with reclining seats with individual tables, armrests, footrests, and adjustable lighting. Passengers will have access to Wi-Fi, power sockets, and USB ports. Passenger information will be displayed on screens.
The trains will have first and second-class accommodation, a quiet zone, a children's area, vending machines with a dining area, and space for bicycles and large luggage with secure storage. They will also be fully adapted to the needs of passengers with reduced mobility.
The trains will be equipped with ETCS Levels 1 and Level 2, an onboard diagnostic system, GPS and internal and external CCTV. The trains will also be designed for operation in the Czech Republic.
