AUSTRIAN Federal Railways (ÖBB) has awarded a contract to Siemens Mobility for 25 three-car and five four-car Mireo EMUs. The order is part of a €5bn-plus framework contract between ÖBB and Siemens for up to 540 single-deck EMUs, of which 70 trains have already been supplied.

The multi-voltage 160km/h Mireo trains are designed to operate in Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic, and will be fitted with ETCS.

The air-conditioned trains will be equipped with Wi-Fi and power sockets and have racks for skis and snowboards. There is space for prams and wheelchairs in the boarding areas, and for up to 30 bicycles. The car bodies are wider than in previous generations of the Mireo EMU.
