HAMBURG-based locomotive leasor Northrail has agreed to acquire 10 DE 18 Stage V locomotives from Vossloh Rolling Stock for deployment in Sweden and Norway. The contract includes an option for an additional 10 locomotives.
The 1.8MW, four-axle locomotives will be equipped with ETCS Level 2 as well as STM ATC-2 onboard signalling equipment. The units will be suitable for heavy shunting as well as mainline operation and will be equipped with a European Union (EU) Stage V emissions-compliant diesel engine. Among the additional functions are a stop-start function, which will offer significant fuel savings. The engines are also prepared and approved for the use of synthetic Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel. Northrail will be responsible for maintaining the locomotives.
Northrail arranged and structured the investment in the new fleet together with its parent, Rive Tangible Assets Income Fund, which is managed by Rive Private Investments. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025.
“This acquisition represents another milestone in our internationalisation strategy and opens up new opportunities for us in the very attractive Scandinavian market,” says Mr Michael Trentzsch, chief investment officer and chief commercial Officer at Northrail.
"We are convinced that this is the ideal time to invest in this market and see a great need for modern, low-emission locomotives in Sweden and Norway. With the DE 18 locomotives, we can meet this demand and sustainably expand our service offering in both countries."
