IRJ at InnoTrans 2024: HITACHI Rail presented the first of a new-generation of Frecciarossa 1000 high-speed trains to Trenitalia CEO Luigi Corradi during an event at the outside track area.
The train is designed to operate in seven of the most important countries in Europe, according to Ferrari, who says the train is “totally new” and is “packed with new technology for both our passengers and our operating staff.”
This is the first Frecciarossa to be built entirely by Hitachi rather than under a joint venture with Bombardier Transportation (now Alstom). The 360km/h train is 202m long and comprises eight coaches with seating for 500 passengers.
The train has an updated Executive Class interior, with more seats and additional luggage space. There are power and internet sockets at every seat with increased bandwidth for Wi-Fi and 5G capability, There is also an improved bistro bar.
The latest ETR1000 benefits from a re-engineered traction motor and new power units, designed to reduce energy consumption. The train has a new bogie and a new train control and monitoring system, and is equipped with Hitachi Rail’s new HMax all-in-one digital asset management platform.

Hitachi Rail is supplying 30 new-generation Frecciarossa trains to Trenitalia with an option for another 10. Delivery will start in September 2025.
Hitachi Rail is also developing designs for an ETR1000 able to run in climates subject to more challenging weather conditions, including higher temperatures and monsoons. With adaptions including modified heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems and filters to prevent ingress of dust and sand, Hitachi Rail says the ETR1000 should be able operate in countries ranging from Canada to Saudi Arabia and Australia.
