THE city of Edmonton’s Evaluation Committee has shortlisted CAF, Hyundai Rotem and Siemens Mobility to participate in a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the design and manufacture of up to 53 new high-floor LRVs.
This follows a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) last year which attracted six submissions.
Edmonton expects to award the LRV contract in late 2025, with delivery of vehicles anticipated in 2028 and 2029.
The LRVs are needed to replace the 37 ageing U2 vehicles that have been operating on the Edmonton light rail network since the first section opened in 1978. The other 16 LRVs are required for the $C 2.7bn ($US 1.9bn) 14km Valley Line West LRT extension scheduled to open in 2028 and the 4.5km Capital Line south extension, construction of which is expected to start later this year.
