THE Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) has exercised an option in a contract with Siemens Mobility for an additional 18 S200 LRVs, taking the total on order to 48. The new vehicles will replace the existing 40-year-old fleet operating on the Red, Blue and Green lines.
GCRTA placed an order worth $US 164m for 24 S200 LRVs in July 2023, exercising a first option for six LRVs in 2024. Manufacture of the LRVs from the initial order is underway at Siemens’ plant in Sacramento, California. Delivery of these vehicles will commence in 2026.
The LRVs will each have 52 seats, four wheelchair spaces, and two bicycle racks while they will feature two door heights for boarding from high and low platforms, enabling operation on all three GCRTA lines.
GCRTA received a $US 130m grant from the US Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to fund the new fleet, which will end the need to operate two separate fleets across the 53km network. The LRVs will replace the 40 single metro cars supplied by Tokyu, which entered service in 1984-85 on the Red Line, and 34 LRVs built by Breda, the last of which entered service on the Blue and Green lines in 1981.
