ČD Cargo, the freight subsidiary of Czech Railways (ČD), has confirmed an agreement with Alstom for the supply of 11 Traxx MS3 multi-voltage locomotives. The order is the final option from a contract for up to 50 locomotives signed with Bombardier Transportation in 2018.

The four-voltage locomotives are authorised for operation in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia.

ČD Cargo received the first of the initial batch of 10 class 388 locomotives in 2019. A further 10 Traxx MS3s were ordered from Bombardier in the same year under a separate contract. Additional options under the contract for 50 locomotives were exercised in 2021 and 2023.

The procurement of the locomotives is in line with ČD Cargo’s strategy to become a major player in the rail freight market in Central Europe and the Balkans, serving North Sea, Baltic and Adriatic ports.
