CAF has been awarded a €250m contract to supply 22 Régiolis EMUs to SNCF Passenger which will deploy them in the Sud region of France, also known as Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA). Each six-car EMU will accommodate 310 passengers.
Design and manufacture of the new fleet will be undertaken at the CAF plant at Reichshoffen in eastern France, which is dedicated to the production of trains over 50m in length. Some equipment will be supplied by Alstom which originally developed the Régiolis as the Coradia Polyvalent before selling the platform and Reichshoffen to CAF in 2022.
The new trains will expand the fleet of 17 Régiolis trains purchased by the Sud region, comprising 15 class B 84500 and two class B 84800 four-car bi-mode trains which are also capable of taking traction current at both 1.5kV dc and 25kV 50Hz ac.
The CAF EMUs will be deployed on Marseille - Aubagne - Toulon - Hyères and Marseille - Toulon - Les Arcs-Draguignan services, replacing the current fleet of 20 class Z 23500 two-car double-deck EMUs which usually operate in multiple. The latter will be transferred to lines west of Marseille as they are not equipped with ETCS which will soon be required on the main line running eastwards to Ventimiglia on the Italian border.
