ALSTOM has announced an order to supply 55 Traxx Hauler electric freight locomotives to Ukrainian Railways (UZ), with deliveries due to commence in 2027.
The order was signed on November 17 in Paris at the Elysée Palace, the official residence of French president, Emmanuel Macron, who was present at the ceremony alongside his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.
Worth €470m, the order was booked in the second quarter of the 2025-26 financial year and includes some spare parts, as well as training drivers and maintenance personnel. The new fleet is being financed with $US 300m from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and $US 190m from the World Bank.
Designed and manufactured at the Alstom plant in Belfort, France, the new locomotives will have a twin four-axle configuration, and will take power at both 3kV dc and 25kV ac. With a power output of 7.2MW to 9.4MW, the locomotives will have a maximum speed of 120km/h. They will be fitted with security systems and radio equipment manufactured in Ukraine.
“The strategic agreement, which we have signed with Alstom for the supply of 55 modern freight locomotives, is an important step towards solving the critical problem of the outdated traction fleet, with an average age of 46 years,” says UZ CEO, Oleksandr Pertsovskyi.
“The locomotives we will deliver are tailored to meet the country’s specific infrastructure needs, while ensuring high performance, reliability, and energy efficiency,” says Alstom CEO, Henri Poupart-Lafarge.
