AARHUS Letbane, which operates a 112km two-line light rail and tram-train network in Aarhus, Denmark, has awarded Stadler a contract for eight Citylink tram-trains with an option for an additional 12 vehicles as well as spare parts management.
The new four-car tram-trains will be 49m long and will accommodate 152 seated and 180 standing passengers, which is 80 more than the current Tango tram-trains, also supplied by Stadler.
The tram-trains will be fitted with batteries to allow them to continue operating for up to 10km when the overhead contact wire is iced over. The batteries will also provide an energy-saving boost during normal operation.
Passengers with reduced mobility will benefit from retractable steps in both end cars to ensure level boarding. Each end car includes two dedicated wheelchair spaces.
The tram-trains are due to enter service at the end of the 2029. This will allow Aarhus Letbane to double services on light rail Line 2 so that both Lystrup/Nye and Lisbjergskolen will have 15-minute interval services to Aarhus main station during the day. At the same time, a 5-minute-interval service will be introduced between Aarhus main station and Aarhus University Hospital.
Frequency will also be doubled on the southern tram-train section of Line 2 to Odder from a 30-minute service to a 15-minute-interval operation on weekdays.
