ROCK Rail’s German subsidiary Rock Rail NnW is to finance the acquisition of 61 Siemens Mireo Plus B BEMUs. The value of the deal has not been disclosed. The new trains will be leased and deployed in northwest Germany by an operator yet to be appointed by Westphalia-Lippe Local Transport Association (NWL).

NWL, which manages public transport services in the eastern part of the Ruhr region, intends to tender operation of its new BEMU network later this year, with the successful bidder being announced in 2026. The 15-year contract is expected to commence with the timetable change in December 2029 and will involve the operation of 7.1 million train-km each year replacing existing DMUs.

According to NWL, this will be the second-largest BEMU fleet in Germany once the new trains are in service.
