LKAB Malmtrafik, the rail freight subsidiary of Swedish iron ore mining company LKAB, has signed a 12-year technical support and spares supply agreement (TSSSA) with Alstom covering its fleet of 34 Iore electric locomotives.
The 5.4MW locomotives, built between 2000 and 2014 by Adtranz, later Bombardier and now Alstom, are deployed to haul iron ore on the Ore Line between Kiruna in Sweden and Narvik in Norway.
The new TSSSA reinforces the long-standing relationship between Alstom and LKAB Malmtrafik, with the manufacturer providing maintenance support since 2007. In addition to the TSSSA, Alstom is also modernising the LKAB heavy-haul fleet, including technical upgrades and the installation of ERTMS, to extend service life. LKAB Malmtrafik says that ensuring the fleet’s long-term availability and performance is critical for both mining operations and for Sweden’s broader industrial competitiveness.
Under the new agreement, Alstom will deliver comprehensive technical support, spare parts supply and logistics, including component overhauls and obsolescence management. Bogie overhauls will be carried out at Alstom’s workshop in Luleå, while traction and auxiliary converter overhauls will be performed at the Västerås component workshop. Operations will be supported by a dedicated warehouse in Kiruna, staffed by Alstom personnel.
