THE European Investment Bank (EIB) and the government of Catalonia have signed a €300m loan to advance works to extend Barcelona’s commuter Line 8 operated by Catalonia Government Railways (FGC).
The 4km extension will connect Plaça Espanya and Gràcia via a new tunnel, improving links to the Baix Llobregat, Bages, Anoia and Vallès Occidental areas of the city, provide an interchange between FGC’s Llobregat–Anoia and Vallès networks as well as strengthen connections with the city’s metro and light rail networks.
The project, expected to complete in 2029/2030, includes the construction of three new stations, at Hospital Clínic, Francesc Macià and Gràcia, as well as the modernisation of existing stations at Gràcia and Plaça Espanya.
The end-to-end journey time for the extension is expected to be seven minutes and the new line is expected to increase capacity on the networks by up to 24 million passengers each year.
