Mexican railfreight volumes reach record levels

MEXICO's railway network carried a record 108 million tonnes of freight in 2011, of which 6.9 million tonnes was intermodal traffic. Rail had a 26% modal share of the freight market, with volumes increasing 3.7% from the 104 million tonnes transported in 2010, well above projections for a 3% increase during the year.

SuperVia to order 60 more emus from CNR Changchun

RIO de Janeiro suburban rail operator SuperVia has selected CNR Changchun, China, as the preferred bidder for a Reais 542.6m ($US 320.1m) contract to supply 60 emus. Other bidders included CSR, CAF, and Alstom.

Brazil "needs $US 82.4bn" for rail projects

Thales wins São Paulo CBTC contract

THE Brazilian-Malaysian consortium responsible for building Line 17 - an 18km monorail - in São Paulo has awarded a contract to Thales to install Seltrac communications-based train control (CBTC) to enable the line to be operated automatically and without drivers. Thales says this is the first CBTC project in Brazil.
